About Fairbridge Square, Santa Ana
Fairbridge Square is a public housing complex located in Santa Ana, in Orange, in the U.S. state of California. The complex was completed in 1947, and it was the first public housing development in Orange County. It was built by the federal government as part of the New Deal program and addressed the Great Depression. The complex initially consisted of 519 units, but it has since been expanded and now includes 736 units. The complex has had several different names, including Fairbridge Village, Santa Ana Gardens, and Pueblo Gardens.
The complex was built on land that had previously been used as an apricot farm, and the developer of the housing project initially named it Fairbridge Village. The village included three buildings for African-American residents—known as Jordan Downs A, B, and C—and five buildings for Caucasians, known as Courtyard 1 through Courtyard 5.
It was the only public housing project in Orange County until 1984, when it began building its public housing developments.
Fairbridge Village was designed by architects Max Dunning and Robert C. Harsche, both graduates of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Fine Arts. The complex was specifically designed to accommodate families and includes several rare amenities, such as central air conditioning and an underground storm drainage system.
The original cost for each housing unit was around $16,000. It was completed in 1947 and opened on February 1st of that year. It was built by the federal government under its Temporary Housing Program, which was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal economic stimulus program. The complex initially consisted of 519 units, but it has since been expanded and now includes 736 units. In the 1950s, a six-unit building for African-American war veterans at Santa Ana Gardens was completed.
