Over the weekend, a few of our team members attended the Orange County Early Childhood STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Symposium. They listened to various speakers ranging from Dr. Gregory Washington (Dean of UCI Samueli School of Engineering), Nino Polizzi (Rocket Scientist and STEM instructor), and James Gapp (an engineer). The team learned about the scientific method and experienced the process through the challenge of making a free standing catapult out of popsicle sticks, rubber bands and a spoon to project a ball a minimum distance of 6 feet. In this activity, they were able to explore various science and math concepts, including drawing plans and realizing that many inventions were created through trial and error. After many attempts, they did it! The conference was a great reminder and inspiration to the teachers that they are educating tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, and inventors.
