About Garden Grove, CA
Garden Grove, California, is a city in Orange County. It was founded by James Irvine I and his son James Irvine II in 1871 as an agricultural community that grew into one of the country’s most giant fruit basket-producing regions. The town prospered until it was incorporated as part of the City of Anaheim on November 1, 1955. It became part of metropolitan Los Angeles when Orange County had rural land to urban sprawl.
Garden Grove was established in 1871 after James Irvine I purchased 160 acres (or 65 hectares) southeast of present-day Santa Ana for $50 per acre ($8/hectare) to plant grapes for wine production. 2) In 1886, it became known as “Irvine’s Farm.” The city was incorporated in 1956. 11) The name is derived from the slogan “Garden of the Miracle (Irvine)” after James Irvine II purchased 240 acres (97 hectares) on the land, which he had initially been purchased from his father for $65 per acre ($9/hectare). Garden Grove Park is home to the annual county fair and allows visitors to see farm life in Orange County.
The fairgrounds hosts the yearly Garden Grove Strawberry Festival and gave birthplace to “the Strawberry Queen pageant.” It is also home to the Agricultural History Farm, one of California’s oldest farm buildings. The building is a replica of a 17-room, early 1800s era Spanish farmhouse built with adobe bricks and redwood beams. It has been restored to its original condition and features exhibits of antique farming equipment. Many other historical buildings and plaques in the park highlight its agricultural history.
