About Old Towne, Orange, California

The city of Orange was founded by members of the United States Army who were sent to occupy California after the Mexican-American War in 1848. The town gained a reputation as “full of cowards” because soldiers would run at the first sign of trouble. The city is now home to Chapman University and many other institutions, businesses, and corporations. The population had grown significantly since 1970 when it was just over 10,000 people; now, more than 60,000 residents live in Orange County. Many of Orange’s rich history can be found at the Bowers Museum, the birthplace of the Goodyear blimp, The La Vida Festival showcasing Latin American cultures annually in April.

The city is also home to numerous art galleries, live theater venues including the historic Majestic Theater and Old Towne Theater, two choral groups including Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Westminster Concert Choir, the MasterSingers of Orange County founded in 1948, and numerous dance groups including The Dance Ensemble which was established in 1955 to share high school students’ achievements in dance with their peers.

Orange is also home to Southern California’s premier cross-country running programs. Established in 1970 by Jerry Dolan, the program has produced numerous state and national champions. The Orange High School boys team won the boys Division II race in 2013 at the CIF State Cross-Country Championships hosted by Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California, and placed 5th at the meet in 2012. The OHS girls team also placed 10th overall at the meet in 2012. Orange is also known for a tradition that predates western civilization in “Old Towne,” which is in downtown Orange. This is where the Santa Ana River flows, and in 1810 when it was part of Spanish-controlled land grants from Mexico, a group of missionaries built a small roadside chapel. ‘The Chapel of Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, La Placita Olvera,’ is a historic landmark that today has been moved to the ‘Old Towne Historical Monument’ in the city.

When it comes to finding good eats in Orange’s Old Towne district, there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from. Locals recommend La Casita de Don Felipe for Mexican food, while those in the mood for Italian can head to Mangia Mangia.
