About Orchard Hills, Irvine, California
The rolling hills are the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Irvine. It takes its name from James Irvine II, an Irish American rancher who purchased this parcel of land in 1864. Irvine was one of California’s earliest large-scale agriculturalists, and he made an enormous contribution to Southern California’s development as a pioneer in agriculture and irrigation. The city now known as Irvine occupies only part of the former Rancho San Joaquin. In 1894, James’ son, James III (known as “The Major”), became partners with William Spurgeon on the first successful fruit farm in Southern California and helped spur the rapid growth of Orange County’s renowned citrus industry. In 1912, James III’s son, James IV (known as “The Major”), and his wife, Arabella McDill, built a resort hotel. In 1936, The Irvine Company bought the 1,650-acre ranch and, in 1964, opened its new headquarters.
In 1966, the University of California system purchased 4,100 acres for one of its new campuses. In 1968, the Irvine Company sold 8,200 acres to the University of California for one dollar per acre. The University then leased much of this land for agricultural and related research purposes. The Irvine Company retained the remaining 2,000 acres for development purposes. The University is a densely-populated campus in a broad, flat valley, bisected by a deep canyon home to many endangered species. The University currently uses about one-third of the total acreage while the rest is being developed into housing communities. This includes villages designed around commercial and brand-new schools, shopping centers, sports complexes, office parks, golf courses, and other amenities.
